This Summer Institute is intended for research teams—i.e., Investigators and their Community Partners
Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) are individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. They are invited to work with their community partners, agencies, and institutions to develop applications to participate in the NIH Summer Institute on Community-Based Participatory Research Targeting the Medically Underserved. (Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply). More than one PD/PI, or multiple PDs/PIs, may be designated on the application for projects that require a “team science” approach that clearly does not fit the single-PD/PI model.
Only Project Directors/Principal Investigators who fit any one of the following categories will be considered - NO EXCEPTIONS:
- Recent COMPLETION OF A DOCTORATE (within the past 2 years) and seeking to pursue further health-related research targeting medically underserved areas and populations. Applicants MUST have completed their doctorate at the time of application.
- Two or more years since completion of a doctorate and substantial work (e.g., pilot study) toward preparation of a grant proposal targeting medically underserved areas and/or populations.
- Experienced researchers seeking to expand their expertise in conducting community based research.
Beyond these eligibility criteria we are seeking researchers who plan to develop NIH R01 or R21 grant applications involving medically underserved areas and populations in response to PA-08-074 (R01): Community Participation in Research; PAR-08-075 (R01): Community Participation Research Targeting the Medically Underserved; PAR-08-076 (R21): Community Participation Research Targeting the Medically Underserved or other applicable NIH program announcements. Those who have extensive research experience will be considered after more junior investigators have been evaluated.
Due to the limited number of spaces in the course, applicants must be U.S. citizens or non-citizen nationals who must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status). Women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
