Technical Assistance Workshop
The abstract submission deadline has now passed. We are no longer accepting abstract submissions for this conference. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by January 13, 2012.

To meet the goal of the conference—to stimulate interactions among researchers and experts in the field—the conference will include Plenary Sessions, Concurrent Oral Presentation and Panel Sessions, and Poster Sessions. Sessions will be structured to encourage interaction and networking between participants.

Applicants are encouraged to submit abstracts for Oral Presentations, Panels and Posters. Descriptions of each type of session, and instructions for abstract submission, are provided below.

Abstract Topics Encouraged for Submission
2012 Conference Theme:
Dissemination & Implementation
Research at the Crossroads

Applicants are encouraged to refer to the Trans-NIH Program Announcement for the range of scientific topics included in the scope of Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Science: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-10-038.html.

Priority will be given to abstracts that address the overall conference theme, Research at the Crossroads, and that present high-quality data (quantitative/qualitative/mixed-methods) to support abstract conclusions. Findings may differ depending on the specific topic of the abstract (e.g. outcomes data from prospective dissemination and/or implementation trials, data on psychometric properties of novel measures, simulation data to support design innovations, conclusions from systematic/realist reviews.)

Abstracts addressing dissemination and/or implementation issues in global settings are welcomed.

Dissemination is the purposive distribution of information and intervention materials to a specific public health or clinical practice audience. The intent is to spread information and the associated evidence-based interventions. Research on dissemination addresses how information about health promotion and care interventions is created, packaged, transmitted, and interpreted among a variety of important stakeholder groups. Further research is needed about how that information is received and acted upon - which dissemination strategies most reliably lead to increases in the demand for effective interventions? How are decisions made to adopt new evidence-based practices, especially if such decisions involve organizational change in health care settings?

Implementation is the use of strategies to adopt, integrate and use evidence-based health interventions and to change practice patterns within specific settings. Research on implementation addresses the extent to which health interventions fit within real-world public health and clinical service systems. Issues of intervention fidelity, adaptation, and reasons for discontinuance are frequently addressed in implementation research. Further, once implemented, implementation research can address whether health interventions are sustained in regular, on-going practice and whether they are responsible for public health changes through methods such as impact evaluation.

All innovative and stimulating topics relevant to dissemination and/or implementation research will be considered for oral or poster presentations. However, the following topics will receive priority ratings. Note that ALL presentations must focus on RESEARCH - simple descriptions of resources or planned programs will not be accepted. Select the category below which best fits your submission. Proposals that do not fit into a listed category will likely not do well unless they are exceptional examples of the overall theme.

  • Scale-up and large scale dissemination and implementation
  • Sustainability
  • Technology, e-Health and social media for dissemination and implementation
  • Innovative methods and measures to study dissemination and implementation processes, mechanisms and contextual influences
  • Other advances in D&I research designs and methodologies
  • Cost and comparative effectiveness issues
  • Coordination of care during care delivery transitions
  • Reduce health disparities or address limited health literacy or numeracy [beyond descriptive research]
  • Simulation modeling for D&I related health policy and practice issues
  • Results of pragmatic studies of implementation in low resource settings
  • Systematic or realist reviews of current D&I topics

Proposal Submission Process

We invite submissions in two categories: (1) Oral (individual or panel) presentations and (2) Poster presentations. Abstracts must be submitted online at http://www.regonline.com/OBSSRDI2012 no later than 5 PM Pacific Time on November 10, 2011. Please read the instructions carefully as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Instructions for Proposal Format

  1. Visit the website and complete all required fields:
    http://www.regonline.com/OBSSRDI2012
  2. Upload your abstract to the website. Please upload an MS Word document with your last name as the file name.

Oral Presentation (individual or panel) and Poster abstracts must be limited to 300 words and contain the following key points:

  • The problem under investigation, hypothesis or research goal (Objective or Introduction are acceptable)
  • Rigorous and relevant research methods (qualitative/quantitative or mixed-methods) used to accomplish the research.
  • A summary of findings that are supported by the data presented.
  • Statement of how the research advances the field of D&I.
  • All abstract submissions must acknowledge the primary source of funding, including government, industry, foundation or academic institutional support.
NOTE that the number of Panels accepted will be limited. In general, we suggest submission as individual oral presentations unless you have a compelling integrated research story that requires multiple presentations in a single session, fits well with the overall conference theme, and addresses one or more of the topic categories listed above.

Session Descriptions

Oral and Panel Presentations: Individual presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes (plus 10 minutes for discussion), and can employ Power Point slides, if needed. Three oral presentations on a common topic will be grouped together by the planning committee for a 90-minute session. Alternatively, presenters can propose a Panel session comprised of three related papers plus an optional discussant (see note above about limited number of panels that can be accepted). Approximately half of the session time should be saved for questions and discussion of the presentations.

Poster Presentations: Posters will be presented on a standard conference poster board. There will be a time allocated for poster discussions, to facilitate interaction with poster presenters. One poster board measuring 4 feet tall x 6 feet wide will be provided on-site for each poster presentation. All mounting supplies (e.g. masking tape, push pins) will also be provided on-site.

Submission and Review Process

The deadline to submit proposals on the application website is 5 PM Pacific Time on November 10, 2011. Please note: your abstract must be prepared prior to submitting your application at the website below. To complete your application please visit: http://www.regonline.com/OBSSRDI2012 .

Abstracts will be reviewed with preference being given to those that 1) focus on the conference theme (see bulleted categories relevant to theme above); 2) utilize rigorous and relevant research methods; 3) present high quality data to support findings; and 4) adequately demonstrate how the study will advance the field.

All proposal submissions will undergo a blind peer review by the Conference Planning Committee. The Planning Committee may elect to elevate any submission to a plenary session, and may also consider conversion of oral presentations to posters, with the consent of the first author. Abstracts selected will be included in an abstract book.

E-mail confirmation will be provided after your submission is received.

The Program Committee will notify the first author about acceptance of the abstract by January 13, 2012.

NOTE ABOUT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WORKSHOP

A half-day technical assistance workshop will be held in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 20th following the conclusion of the main conference.

The workshop is intended for researchers who are interested in submitting an application under current funding opportunity announcements (FOAs), with an emphasis on small grants (R03s) and exploratory/developmental grants (R21s). See: “Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health,” PAR-10-039 and PAR-10-040. Related FOAs will be discussed at the workshop. Preference will be given to those investigators who have not previously been awarded an NIH D&I grant.

Participants interested in the technical assistance workshop should submit a one page abstract including the following:

  1. Key question to be answered by the research
  2. Summary of approach and methods
  3. Any questions about advancing the topic further

Investigators will receive content-specific feedback through written review comments and via group discussion. Investigators interested in individual, one-on-one sessions with NIH staff are encouraged to arrange them prior to arriving at the conference as individual sessions will not be a formal part of the program.

Submit your one page abstract as a Word document to aburke@thehillgroup.com by January 20, 2012. In the subject line of the email, please indicate the Technical Assistance Workshop Submission.
